After a twenty five year gap in riding, I took the MSF course on a Virago 250. It was great fun and I too thought that maybe that would be the way to get started riding again. I stuck with purchasing the Savage though because I figured at my age that would be my only bike and I didn't want to out grow it. After three months and a thousand winter miles, I glad I did. Trust me, after a month of practice you won't have any problems on the Savage. It's not that much heavier than the Virago and you'll appreciate the extra oomph.
